Schmidt Rebound Hammer or Concrete tester is used for quality assessment of Concrete based on its hardness and Hardness in term of rebound number is Co-related to find compressive strength.
Follows Various National & International standards like IS-516, ASTM C805, DIN 1048,BS1881
History:
Rebound Hammer Mechanism was first Invented by Ernst Schmidt(a Swiss Engineer) hence Rebound Hammer is also called as Schmidt
Concept /Principle:
Rebound Hammer Contains a spring which is attached with a dead weight and plunger. Plunger is pressed against concrete surface perpendicularly till the point where dead weight suddenly gets unlocked from lever connceted to casing due to which spring force and inertia of the dead weight acts together to hit the concrete surface.
Based on the hardness of concrete surface, plunger rebounds back and its position is recorded by deflector on the Rebound number scale, where rebound numbers are calibrated with stiffness of spring and hardness of concrete. Rebound numbers are directly proportion to the hardness of concrete, more the hardness higher will be the rebound number or vice versa.
Application:
It can be applied on all concrete structures such as bridges, buildings, retaining walls, barrages and many more. But they are also the perfect instruments to test in tunnels (e.g. the formwork stripping strength which is the concrete compressive strength fc to be achieved before removal of the formwork).
Types:
1. Type L-0.735 Nm impact energy; For Light Weight Concrete, Small and Impact sensitive Concrete.
2. Type N-2.207 Nm impact energy; For testing Normal Weight Concrete.
3. Type M-29.43 Nm impact energy; For heavy and mass Concrete.
To check the calibration, rebound Hammer is pressed on Anvil of Hardness HRC66+/-2
Vedantrik Hammer Gives 80+/-2 Rebound Number on Anvil of Hardness HRC66+/-2
